Tattoo Aftercare: Day 1 to Day 7 Healing Guide
Getting a new tattoo is exciting — but how you care for it in the first week makes all the difference between a sharp, vibrant piece and one that fades too soon. Here’s a simple day-by-day healing guide:
Your artist will cover your tattoo with a bandage or wrap. Keep it on for a few hours.
Wash your hands, gently remove the wrap, and clean your tattoo with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel (no rubbing!).
Apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare ointment if advised by your artist.
Day 2 – 3 – Redness & Tenderness
Your tattoo will feel sore and might look red. Totally normal.
Wash gently twice a day. Don’t soak it.
Keep it moisturized but never greasy.
Avoid direct sunlight, swimming pools, or gyms.
Day 4 – 5 – Itch & Flake Stage
The tattoo will start to scab and peel, almost like a sunburn. Don’t scratch or pick!
Moisturize lightly to ease the itch.
Wear loose, clean clothes to avoid friction.
Day 6 – 7 – Settling In
The worst of the itching and peeling will calm down.
Your tattoo will look a little dull as it heals under the skin — this is normal.
Keep following the wash-and-moisturize routine.
Pro Tips
Never use alcohol, peroxide, or petroleum jelly.
Don’t let pets, dirty hands, or gym equipment touch your tattoo.
Listen to your artist’s instructions — they know what works best for their style of work.
By the end of week one, your tattoo should be on its way to looking awesome. Healing takes patience, but the results last a lifetime if you treat your ink with care.
